Co-owner Jon Richter grew up in the timber and logging industry. His father marked timber, traveled to veneer mills, and worked with loggers to procure the high-quality logs needed for veneer.
When Jon moved to Iron River, Michigan, in 1996, he joined his dad and worked in the sawmill throughout high school. He then joined the National Guard as a heavy equipment operator and graduated top of his class.
Jon and his father started their sawmill in Iron River in 2003, but Jon's father sadly passed away the following year. Consequently, Jon took over and ran the business by himself. He upgraded and modernized it in 2014 to make it into everything he and his father had dreamed of—and more.
During the summer of 2018, Jon approached Shamco, Inc. and partnered to form Shamco Lumber. Jon’s extensive knowledge of the lumber business, along with Shamco’s business expertise, has allowed Jon to take his mill to the next level. With a new name and new ownership, Shamco Lumber is poised for continued success and growth in the years to come.
Shamco Lumber staff now enjoy a synergistic flow between the three Shamco companies:
- Shamco Lumber (the mill)
- Shamco, Inc. (a logging & trucking company)
- S&S Treeworkx (tree trimming and removal)
Shamco Lumber initiated a large expansion in late 2021, which tripled our output and increased our yield. With the increase in capacity, many more local loggers were able to process and sell their wood products. The Shamco Lumber crew can also cut hard maple year-round. This has resulted in a significant increase both in quantity and quality of product outcomes.
